How to Display All File Extensions in Windows

The "Love Bug" virus and it's variants are spread through Visual Basic Script (.vbs) file attachments.  These viruses are known to take the name of existing files, like .jpg images, and add the .vbs extension.

With the rash of viruses being spread through e-mail attachments, it's recommended that you change your Windows settings to show the file name extensions for all types on your computer:

  • Double-click on "My Computer" on your Windows Desktop, click "View", then "Folder Options"...

  • You will see the following "Folder Options" dialog box.  Then click on the "View" Tab...

  • Under the "Advanced Settings" options, clear the checkbox marked "Hide file extensions for known file types".

  • Click "Apply" to accept the change, then "OK".  You can close the "My Computer" window.

You will see that in any folder on your system will now display the full extension for all file types.

Protect your system!  When you receive an attached file in an e-mail message, you'll then be able to recognize what type of file it is easily.  If you see an attachment with a .vbs extension, DELETE IT!!
